Artificial Intelligence Competency Framework for Engineering Faculty Development

Artificial intelligence is transforming engineering education faster than curricula and faculty development programs can respond. Although many instructors already use generative AI tools, this does not necessarily imply a deep understanding of their fundamentals, limitations, or pedagogical possibilities.

The project proposes a differentiated framework of artificial intelligence competencies organized into three complementary profiles: engineers in general, computer science or data science specialists, and engineering faculty. The framework integrates nine competency dimensions, accompanied by checklists and rubrics with four levels of proficiency.

This framework now has an interactive version: you can take the AI competency diagnostic and find out which areas you should work on. If you want to use it as a teacher — to set up your groups and see your students’ level — register as a teacher. If you’d rather take it yourself and support us by sharing your demographic data (age range and education level) for research purposes, register as a participant.
